What is Trauma?

Trauma is the emotional and psychological impact of experiences that overwhelm our ability to cope or feel safe. It can come from a single event or develop over time through difficult relationships, childhood experiences, loss, neglect, abuse, or other experiences that disrupt our sense of safety and trust.

Sometimes, the experience itself has ended, but your mind and body continue to respond as though the danger is still present. You may find yourself feeling anxious, shutting down, avoiding certain situations, experiencing difficulty trusting others, or repeating patterns that are hard to understand and change.

Trauma isn’t only about what happened. It’s about what stayed with you.

Trauma therapy can help you process these experiences, rebuild a sense of safety, and move forward with greater ease.

How Trauma Can Show Up

Trauma can affect more than our memories. It can shape how we feel, respond, connect with others, and move through everyday life.

You may experience:

  • Feeling anxious, on edge, or easily overwhelmed
  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that feel triggering
  • Feeling shut down, numb, or disconnected
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • People-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries
  • Shame, guilt, or persistent self-criticism
  • Unwanted memories or reminders of the past
  • Repeating relationship or coping patterns you want to change
  • Feeling stuck in survival mode

However trauma shows up for you, understanding its impact can be an important first step toward healing.

How Trauma Therapy Can Help

Trauma therapy can help you understand how past experiences continue to shape the way you feel, respond, and connect with others. Rather than simply managing symptoms, therapy can help you process what’s beneath them and create lasting change.

At Sera Psychology, the approach to trauma therapy is grounded in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based approach designed to help the brain process distressing experiences that may still feel unresolved.

Together, we can work toward:

  • Reducing the emotional intensity of painful memories and triggers
  • Feeling safer and more grounded in your body
  • Understanding and changing patterns shaped by past experiences
  • Developing healthier ways of responding to stress
  • Building greater trust and connection with yourself and others
  • Moving forward without the past feeling as present as it once did

The goal isn’t to erase what happened, but to help you move forward with greater ease, confidence, and connection to yourself.
