What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps individuals process and heal from distressing life experiences that continue to affect them in the present. EMDR therapy is widely recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD, but it can also be helpful for anxiety, low self-esteem, difficult relationship patterns, and other experiences that continue to influence how you think, feel, and respond to the world around you.

When difficult or overwhelming experiences occur, the brain may not fully process them. As a result, memories, emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs can continue to feel present long after the event has passed. These unresolved experiences can contribute to anxiety, emotional distress, self-doubt, relationship difficulties, and feeling "stuck" in recurring patterns.

EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements or gentle tactile pulses—to help the brain process these experiences in a safe and structured way. The goal is not to erase or forget what happened, but to reduce the emotional intensity associated with the memory so it no longer feels as overwhelming or continues to impact your daily life in the same way.

Serena Boyaci provides EMDR therapy in Edmonton and virtual EMDR therapy across Alberta for individuals seeking support with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, self-esteem concerns, relationship challenges, and other distressing life experiences.
